Panera Vegan, Vegetarian and Gluten-Free Menu 2026: What You Can Actually Order
Panera has a reputation as the fast-casual chain you go to when someone in the group has dietary restrictions. That reputation is half-earned. There is genuinely good vegetarian food here, a handful of workable vegan orders, and a bakery that is effectively off-limits if you avoid gluten. The useful thing is knowing which is which before you are standing at the counter.
This guide covers what is actually vegetarian, what can be made vegan, what the gluten situation really is, and how to navigate Panera’s allergen information. Calorie figures come from Panera’s published nutrition guide effective 17 June 2026; allergen details come from Panera’s own allergen guide for the same period.
Start Here: What Panera Says About Allergens
Before any list of “safe” items, the chain’s own language matters, because it sets the limits on everything below. Panera states:
“We cannot guarantee that any of our menu items are free of allergens because we use shared equipment and handle common allergens throughout our supply chain and bakery-cafe.”
It further notes that many products contain or may come into contact with wheat, peanuts, soy, tree nuts, milk, eggs, fish, shellfish and sesame.
That is not boilerplate to skim past. It means Panera makes no gluten-free claim about any item, and it means that for a severe allergy — coeliac disease, an anaphylactic nut or dairy allergy — the honest answer is that a bakery-cafe with shared ovens, shared prep surfaces and flour in the air is a high-risk environment. If your restriction is a preference or an intolerance, you have real options. If it is a medical allergy, treat everything below as a starting point for a conversation with the cafe manager, not as clearance.
Vegetarian Options at Panera
This is where Panera is strongest. Two items on the menu carry “Vegetarian” in the official product name, which is a useful signal that the recipe is built that way rather than merely appearing meat-free.
Soups
| Soup | Cup | Bowl | Bread Bowl |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vegetarian Black Bean Soup | 90 | 140 | 740 |
| Vegetarian Creamy Tomato with Croissant Croutons | 240 | 340 | 880 |
| Broccoli Cheddar | 280 | 420 | 930 |
| Mac & Cheese | 490 | 980 | 1,140 |
The Vegetarian Black Bean Soup is the quiet star of the entire menu for anyone watching calories: 90 calories for a cup, 140 for a bowl, and genuinely filling because of the fibre. Nothing else on the board comes close to that ratio.
Broccoli Cheddar and Mac & Cheese are vegetarian but emphatically not light — a bowl of Mac & Cheese is 980 calories, which is more than any sandwich except the Toasted Italiano. Worth knowing before you treat it as the “safe” vegetarian default. For the full lineup and how the seasonal soups rotate, see our Panera soup menu guide.
Sandwiches
Three meat-free options in the case:
- Mediterranean Veggie — 520 calories. Feta, hummus, cucumber, lettuce, tomato, red onion and peppadew peppers on tomato basil bread. The lightest sandwich Panera sells and the best vegetarian order on the menu.
- Toasted Caprese Focaccia — 740 calories. Mozzarella, tomato and basil. The half is on the $4.99 Mix & Match value menu, which makes it the best-value vegetarian order in the building.
- Grilled Cheese — 810 calories. Heavier than people expect.
The full lineup with calories is in our Panera sandwiches menu guide.
Salads
| Salad | Half | Whole |
|---|---|---|
| Strawberry Poppyseed Salad (no pecans) | 80 | 170 |
| Strawberry Poppyseed Salad (with pecans) | 140 | 270 |
| Caesar Salad | 270 | 530 |
| Greek Salad | 310 | 630 |
The Strawberry Poppyseed Salad without chicken is the lowest-calorie item of any substance on the menu — 170 calories for a whole salad. It is seasonal, so availability varies. The Greek Salad is the most reliable year-round vegetarian salad, and as we will see in a moment, it is also the single most useful item for vegan diners. More detail in our complete salad menu guide.
One caution on the Caesar: traditional Caesar dressing contains anchovy. Panera does not market its Caesar as vegetarian, and if that matters to you, ask before ordering or swap the dressing.
Vegan Options at Panera
Here the picture narrows considerably. Panera does not operate a dedicated vegan menu and does not label items as vegan, so ordering vegan means building around a small set of items that happen to contain no animal products, and removing cheese or dressing from others.
What the allergen guide confirms as free of both milk and egg:
- Greek Salad — 630 calories whole, 310 half. No milk, no egg. This is the most substantial genuinely vegan-compatible item on the menu, and it is available year-round.
- Agave Lemonade — 210 calories for 20 fl oz.
- Sourdough, Ciabatta and Tomato Basil breads — all free of milk and egg, which is why a side of baguette works as a vegan add-on.
Vegetarian Black Bean Soup is the obvious candidate for a vegan order, and in many cafes it is the go-to recommendation. Panera’s allergen guide lists it as “may contain” milk rather than definitively milk-free, which reflects shared-equipment risk rather than a dairy ingredient in the recipe. If you are vegan by preference, it is a reasonable order. If you are avoiding dairy for medical reasons, that “may contain” is the whole point of the flag and should be taken seriously.
A practical vegan order
A whole Greek Salad with a side baguette and an agave lemonade comes to roughly 950 calories and is entirely buildable from items confirmed free of milk and egg. A half Greek Salad with a cup of black bean soup is the lighter version at around 400 calories, with the dairy caveat above.
The Mediterranean Veggie is often recommended as a vegan option on other sites. It is not — it contains feta. You can ask for it without the feta, which makes it workable, but the sandwich as built is vegetarian only.
The Gluten-Free Reality at Panera
This needs to be stated plainly, because a great deal of content online is vague about it: Panera does not make gluten-free claims about any item on its menu. The chain bakes bread on site. Flour is handled throughout the cafe. The shared-equipment disclaimer quoted at the top of this article is Panera’s own acknowledgement that it cannot control cross-contact.
For someone with coeliac disease, that means Panera is not a safe choice, and no amount of careful ordering changes the underlying environment. That is a disappointing answer but it is the accurate one, and it is better to know it before you are hungry and standing in line.
For someone reducing gluten by preference or managing a mild sensitivity, there are items built without wheat ingredients — salads without croutons, soups other than the noodle and pasta varieties, fruit cups, yoghurt parfaits without granola. The published allergen guide identifies wheat and gluten sources product by product and is the only source worth relying on. Panera updates it periodically, so check the current edition rather than a cached list.
Dairy-Free Ordering
Dairy is the restriction Panera handles best after vegetarian, because so much of the menu is built around bread, vegetables and broth rather than cheese.
Confirmed free of milk per the allergen guide: Greek Salad, Agave Lemonade, Sourdough, Ciabatta and Tomato Basil breads. Unsweetened iced tea, hot tea and black coffee are also safe, which matters more than it sounds if you are ordering a drink alongside.
Items to avoid or modify: anything with “cheddar”, “gouda”, “feta”, “parmesan” or “cream” in the name, Mac & Cheese, Broccoli Cheddar, the Vegetarian Creamy Tomato, every latte and cappuccino, and the smoothies, which are made with Greek yoghurt.
How to Actually Use Panera’s Allergen Information
Panera publishes two separate documents: a nutrition guide with calories and macros, and an allergen guide that maps each product against wheat, tree nuts, milk, egg, soy, fish, shellfish, peanuts and sesame. They are updated on a rolling schedule and each carries an effective date.
Three things worth knowing about how they work:
The allergen guide uses “may contain” as a distinct category from “contains”. That distinction is the shared-equipment risk made explicit, and for a serious allergy it should be read as a warning, not a maybe.
Panera’s own note is that the customisation tools on its website and app do not add allergen information for ingredients you add, and do not remove allergen references for ingredients you take off. Customising an order in the app does not give you a recalculated allergen profile.
The cafe manager is the only person who can tell you about that specific kitchen on that specific day. For a serious allergy that conversation is not optional.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Panera have vegan options?
Not a dedicated vegan menu, but several items contain no animal products. The Greek Salad is confirmed free of both milk and egg and is the most substantial option. Agave Lemonade and the sourdough, ciabatta and tomato basil breads are also free of both.
Is Panera’s black bean soup vegan?
The recipe is vegetarian and contains no dairy ingredient, but Panera’s allergen guide flags it as “may contain” milk because of shared equipment. Fine for a dietary preference; not appropriate if you have a dairy allergy.
Does Panera have gluten-free bread?
No. Panera does not offer a gluten-free bread and does not make gluten-free claims about any menu item, because bread is baked on site and the cafe handles wheat throughout.
Can someone with coeliac disease eat at Panera?
Panera’s own disclaimer says it cannot guarantee any item is free of allergens due to shared equipment. For coeliac disease, that makes it an unsuitable environment regardless of what you order.
What is the lowest-calorie vegetarian item at Panera?
A cup of Vegetarian Black Bean Soup at 90 calories, or a whole Strawberry Poppyseed Salad without pecans at 170 calories when it is in season.
Is the Mediterranean Veggie sandwich vegan?
No — it contains feta. It is vegetarian as built, and can be ordered without the cheese to make it vegan-compatible.
Which Panera salads are vegetarian?
The Greek Salad and the Strawberry Poppyseed Salad are vegetarian as built. The Caesar is meat-free but traditional Caesar dressing contains anchovy, so confirm at the cafe if that matters to you.
